I was at the Deventer Jazz Festival last week and saw a great performance by the band of Wouter Hamel. Great music and performance on stage, loved the dynamic pianist.

Viggo and the new Samyang 85mm f/1.4

FUJIFILM X-Pro1 | Samyang 85mm f/1.4

Last week I bought the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 with a Canon Mount and a Kiwi EF to X-mount adapter. The Samyang is a beautiful lens, and very affordable, but manual focus.

On my Fuji I have enough options from wide-angle to zoom, with the Fujinon XF 18-55mm F2.8-4 R LM OIS being the widest and the Fujinon XF 60mm F2.4 R Macro being the most zoom. But for portrait I was looking in the 85mm range and when I saw the reviews about the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 I knew that would be a great portrait lens on the FUJIFILM X-Pro1.

Samyang does have a few models with a native X-Mount already but unfortunately not this one. But an adapter was available so that is no real problem.

The two portraits of Viggo were both in front of a large window with a white reflector in front of him (Thanks to Marit the assistent). Both were wide open at f/1.4.

Another thing that was new for me was using a monopod during this session and that worked great. I saw this technique in a workshop video by Damien Lovegrove and it really works.

The RAW file of the first portrait was post processed in Lightroom 5 beta with the VSCO Film preset Kodak Tri-X 400. The second is a jpeg from the camera with the Velvia preset.

And here a shot of the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 itself with the adapter.
